Brownback in Iowa

Sam Brownback was in Cedar Rapids Iowa today, his first stop on a week long multi-state tour. Brownback will also be campaigning this week in Michigan, Florida and South Carolina.

Brownback said that he would like to focus his campaign on issues that people can agree on, like climate change, poverty and human trafficking.

He also continued his call to find a diplomatic solution to the problem in Iraq. Brownback's position on Iraq is in stark contrast to the front runners, John McCain, Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney who are behind the President's escalation plans.

Brownback on Fox News Sunday

Sam Brownback appeared yesterday on Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace, where he confirmed his opposition to the escalation in Iraq and his pro-life stance.

Brownback said that he will be supporting the Warner resolution in the Senate this week and stated "we've got to start getting people pulling together here, Republicans and Democrats, because you can't run a war with one party for it and one party against it."

Questioned on some of his previous stances on social conservative issues which were unclear, Brownback asked that he be judged on his record. He said that he has voted 100% of the time for pro-life positions.

This is in contrast to Mitt Romney, who Brownback said that "At times he's stated that he's pro-life, and at times he's stated differently."

Brownback Is Running For President

Sam Brownback of Kansas yesterday officially declared that he would be seeking the Republican nomination for President.

The announcement by Brownback was overshadowed in the media by the announcement by Hillary Clinton. But Brownback's pitch was to a different audience.

As a social conservative Brownback has no equal in the Republican Party. He is pledging to restore Families and culture. His statement is unequivocal on what he stands for.

"We need to revitalize marriage, support the formation of families, and encourage a culture of commitment. We need a culture that encourages what is right and discourages what is wrong—and has the wisdom to understand the difference."

Brownback is Catholic, and while that might not be the most attractive option for many of the social conservative base of the GOP, it is miles ahead of Mitt Romney. Romney is Mormon, and his positions on abortion and gay rights have previously been extremely liberal. Only in recent times has he changed his views.

And given that the leading candidates thus far in McCain and Giuliani are moderate, Brownback may well be the candidate of choice among many in the party. So while he doesn't rate in the polls thus far, expect his figures to shoot up in the near future.

Farmer Brownback?

All Sam Brownback wanted to be when he grew up, was a farmer, or so his mother says.

The Lawrence Journal News in Kansas is reporting that Brownback was a good kid who never got into trouble, and was a do gooder who just wanted to please.

Now Sam Brownback is running for President, something his mother didnt expect when he was "...just a lad running tractors and watering hogs on the family farm outside Parker..."

Brownback opposes Bush Iraq plan

Sam Brownback has joined other senior Republicans like Chuck Hagel in speaking out against the President Bush plan to send more US troops to Iraq.

Brownback who was previously a strong supporter of Bush's plan in Iraq, issued a
statement on the new plan. Brownback said that he does not believe that more troops are the answer, but rather a political solution needs to be found.

Brownback is currently in Iraq, and has met with the Iraqi Prime Minister as well as US Generals Casey and Odierno and US Ambassador Khalilzad.

He will be following up this visit with a trip to Ethiopia where he will be looking at issues like the situation in Somalia and Sudan. This is at least his second visit to Africa in just over 12 months, having conducted a fact finding mission to the Congo, Rwanda and Kenya in December 2005. The Brownback tour will also take in Afghanistan and Pakistan where he will be having a first hand look at the war on terror.

Brownback's credentials on foreign relations will certainly be enhanced by his extensive travels. And what better place to be than in Iraq, talking to the Prime Minister and Generals, right at the time that Bush announced his new plan.

Brownback to Announce his run Jan 20

Sam Brownback, Republican Senator from Kansas, is set to announce his run for the Presidency in his home state on January 20. This announcement will come just 6 weeks after he launched a Exploratory Committee in December.

Brownback is serving his second term as a Senator, having served briefly in the House between 1994 and 1996.

As a strong social conservative, Brownback will be running heavily on family values, having declared that the institutions of the "...family and the culture—are under withering attack.".

Brownback has a solid record on important social issues that will appeal to the conservative, or religious right of the Republican party, opposing all forms of abortion and banning same sex marriage. Although he has little recognition outside of Kansas, he does have the opportunity to capture this conservative vote in the nomination process.

Brownback completes the package by being economically conservative, and just days ago signed the "Taxpayer Protection Pledge", alongside another possible candidate Mitt Romney.

Although he is an outsider, in this race, anything is possible, particularly if the conservative wing of the Republicans give Brownback their support.
