The following article appeared this morning in South Carolina newspaper, The State. There is a serious void in social conservatism from the front runners, Giuliani and McCain, and the third favorite, Mitt Romney has a questionable record on these issues. There is perhaps room for another leader to emerge, and it is here that Sam Brownback and Mike Huckabee may make a play.

Three weeks ago, an estimated 350 Republican Party activists attended a luncheon in Columbia for GOP presidential hopeful Sam Brownback. Many came out of curiosity.
The U.S. senator from Kansas, viewed as an “ideologue,” is considered by many the leading “Christian right” candidate in the race.
Brownback certainly didn’t disappoint his audience, made up mostly of religious conservatives. Members punctuated the air with shouts of “amen” and “praise the Lord.” It sounded more like a revival service than a political gathering.
Many conservatives and religious leaders view Brownback as a serious candidate to succeed President George W. Bush.
Whether Brownback does, there’s little doubt he will become a major figure in U.S. public life and an increasingly critical player in its governing coalitions.

Major Tour for Sam Brownback
Sam Brownback is making a major campaign tour of America, visiting 8 states in 7 days.
On Friday, Brownback was in Iowa and Nebraska before heading back to Washington DC for Senate Iraq resolution vote yesterday.
Last night he was in Florida and this week will head to Ohio, Kentucky, Mississippi, Arizona and California.
Brownback will end his tour in Iowa next Saturday.

Brownback Says Romney is Misleading
The campaign for Sam Brownback has issued a statement that accuses Mitt Romney of being misleading regarding Brownback's stance on abortion.
Romney's camp suggested that Brownback had once been pro-choice, but had changed once elected to office, and that is when he had a conversion.
The Brownback campaign has hit back, saying that Mitt Romney has had 3 different positions on abortion. According to Brownback's campaign manager, Rob Wasinger, "Mitt Romney's flip flops are enough to make John Kerry blush" and said it was absurd that Romney was comparing himself to Sam Brownback.
The Brownback campaign maintains that he has always been pro-life.
Mitt Romney today officially announced that he will be seeking the Republican nomination for President.

Brownback in Michigan
Sam Brownback was in Michigan yesterday to address the annual GOP convention.
Brownback gave his address to over 3000 party activists who had gathered to hear some of the potential Republican nominees for President.

Brownback Confirms No Abortion
Sam Brownback was in Colombia, South Carolina late last week, and confirmed that he would be pushing for an end to abortion.
Brownback was speaking to a crowd of about 200 people. He also said that he supports a ban on gay marriage, and would like to provide tax credits that encourages traditional marriage.
South Carolina is a key state for Brownback, and he will be looking for support from social conservatives there.
